PT coach responds to injury allegations

Veteran Peters Township High School football Coach Rich Piccinini calls the possibility of a police investigation into allegations he permitted athletes to play sports while injured "absurd."

Piccinini's attorney, Robert G. Del Greco Jr., issued a statement Friday regarding the allegations.

"For 22 years, Rich Piccinini has coached football without even a whisper of impropriety. The excellent reputation that he has earned over two decades should speak volumes as to the absurdity of the 'Mortland' report."

Mark Mortland, a physical therapist for 25 years, a certified athletic trainer and owner of Mortland Physical Therapy in McMurray, is contracted by Peters Township School District to provide athletic training services to the high school.

Mortland has said that athletes have played while injured and his employees have been belittled by Piccinini. He sent a letter to district Superintendent Nina Zetty Nov. 30 outlining his concerns.

Piccinini was named in a complaint filed Tuesday with Washington County Children and Youth Services alleging someone was permitting athletes to play sports, most notably high school football, with "concussions or concussion-like symptoms."

"The investigated and unfounded witch hunt in August has reared its ugly head in January, this time in a meritless CYS complaint, presumably made by an anonymous source," Del Greco's statement reads. "Playing time in high school football in Western Pennsylvania, a currency that has become more valuable than gold to the obsessed and disgruntled, has undoubtedly motivated yet another round of baseless allegations."

Del Greco added that considerable resources have already been dedicated by a "real" superintendent, athletic director and principal to investigate the accusations, and the result was that there is no truth to the reports.

"While no one welcomes a police investigation, hopefully this second inquiry will yet again expose the allegations as scurrilous attacks on Mr. Piccinini and, importantly, put them to rest again and forever."

Both Piccinini and Del Greco refused further comment.

Anyone wonder why such and innocent man needs such a high priced attorney?
