United Way kicks off annual campaign for 2012
By Barbara Murphy, Barbara@unitedwaywash.org
Fall is traditionally a busy time in Southpointe, and that is especially true this fall with all the road construction and new building that’s taking place here.

Amidst all the construction you will find United Way of Washington County hard at work kicking off its annual campaign throughout Southpointe at various business locations.

Campaigns here can be full-blown celebrations, including breakfasts, lunches, raffles and contests, like at Range Resources and Fairmont Supply, to more low-key electronic campaigns such as those held at smaller companies.

In last year’s campaign, the top three businesses in terms of dollars raised during United Way’s campaign were all based in Southpointe. They were Consol Energy Inc., Range Resources Inc. and Columbia Gas of PA.

Whatever their size or style of conducting United Way campaigns, all the participating Southpointe businesses have several things in common:

¦ They have a real commitment to this community and to improving conditions for people in Washington County.

¦ They trust United Way, much like they trust a stockbroker or investment manager, to fully vet each charity receiving funding to be sure their corporate dollars and the contributions of their employees are only invested in the most efficiently run charities, managed with the highest integrity and honesty

¦ They offer the enthusiastic endorsement and generous support of their top management team, most of whom are leadership givers to United Way

¦ They have committed employee campaign managers, with committees that plan the campaign and all accompanying events and activities.

¦ They recognize the important work being funded locally by United Way at local charities

¦ They understand that by supporting United Way they are directly supporting the 44 local programs and services currently receiving United Way funding.

Among the 44 Washington County charities currently receiving United Way funding are Washington Women’s Shelter, Washington City Mission, Catholic Charities, CASA for Kids, Red Cross, ARC, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.

Each agency had to submit to a financial review, personal interviews and a detailed application process to show they are operated in an efficient and effective manner and are in the position to offer the appropriate services and programs that will help people in our community receive the vital services they need to develop lifelong solutions to the social and health problems that undermine their well-being and prospects for a better future.
