Mylan passes the test of time
Fifty years ago, John F. Kennedy was in the first year of his presidency. The average house cost $12,500. A gallon of gasoline went for 27 cents. President Obama was born. And Mylan Inc. came into being in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., as a drug-distribution company.

Mylan went public in 1973, hit $1 billion in sales in 2002 and surpassed the $5 billion sales mark a couple of years ago.

It’s an achievement for any company to survive for 50 years, but Mylan has done more than that. It’s become the largest global generic pharmaceuticals outfit based in this country.

This edition’s cover piece by Mike Bradwell looks at Mylan’s history and its current place in the industry under the guidance of Robert Coury, who recently received the Southpointe CEO Association’s “World Class CEO Award.”

Elsewhere in this issue, state Rep. Jesse White brings us the latest from Harrisburg, commenting on the property reassessment issue and how he and other lawmakers worked to delay a reassessment in Washington County while working toward making the system more fair for property owners.

The Hefren-Tillotson investment column offers advice about avoiding major financial mistakes in retirement, providing a series of questions to help those who are retired or nearing retirement protect and grow the money they have saved.

Dr. Stephanie Urchick, executive director of the CEO Association, takes a fascinating look at the differences in networking skills between the “Baby Boomers” and those who have followed them.

Barbara Murphy, president of United Way of Washington County, details the results of this year’s annual campaign. Despite what she noted as a “challenging economic climate,” the United Way locally raised $1,194,562, a record for the organization in its 86 years in Washington County. And Southpointe companies led the way. Consol Energy and its employees generated more than $114,000 in donations, and they were followed by the folks from Range Resources and Columbia Gas.

In the health and leisure area, Dr. Geno Pisciottano offers information about stress-induced adrenal exhaustion and ways to combat the problem, and Brent Johnson, head professional at Southpointe Golf Club, provides instruction to help golfers improve their putting and, thus, lower their scores.

We hope you’ll enjoy this edition’s offerings, and we’ll be looking forward to the October issue, which will include a wrapup of the Mylan Classic golf tournament and much more.

Have a great summer.
