Southpointe: It’s not just offices
For many people, their first impression when considering Southpointe is that it’s a collection of office buildings, but there’s a lot more to Southpointe than that, and it’s well illustrated by this edition’s cover story by Michael Bradwell about Auma Actuators.

Auma, a manufacturer of electric valve actuators, has seen steady growth in employment since coming to Southpointe in 2003, and the company is in the midst of a major expansion that will add 16,000 square feet to its production areas by early next year.

When all is said and done, the project will result in an investment of more than $3 million, allowing the company to meet a directive from its overseas parent company to boost its manufacturing capacity.

The Auma story serves as a reminder that while there are plenty of offices at Southpointe, it’s also a place where people live, play and, yes, build things. Also in this edition, Dr. Stephanie Urchick, executive director of the Southpointe CEO Association, gives us the second installment of her excellent series on networking. This time, the subject is traits that make a good networker. One of the keys is being a good listener, an attribute that seems to be in rather short supply these days, especially among the folks in Washington, D.C.

State Rep. Jesse White takes a look at a controversial proposal to change the way in which Pennsylvania’s electoral votes are distributed, arguing that the plan would put an end to Pennsylvania’s days as a key state in presidential elections.

Nathan Kauffman from Hefren-Tillotson has some advice for those who might be considering a shift in money from a 401(k) plan to an IRA. It’s a move that might work well for some investors, but not at all for others.

With the advent of fall, there’s been quite a noticeable change in the weather, and we’ll soon be facing the unpleasant task of removing snow from our driveways and sidewalks, but before that happens, Brent Johnson, head professional at Southpointe Golf Club, says there’s still time to make some nips and tucks to your golf game.

For those of us of a certain vintage – including this writer – it’s also time to think about trying to stave off the ravages of age. Kimber Waldorf, fitness director at the Health Club at Southpointe, explains how strength training is important to delay the effects of aging and reduce chances of injury.

And it’s that time of year again. Barbara Murphy of United Way of Washington County reminds us that the organization, which provides help to more than 40 local charities, is kicking off its annual campaign. The Southpointe community will be at the center of that effort, as Barbara notes that last year, the three businesses that topped the contribution list – Consol Energy Inc., Range Resources and Columbia Gas – are all based here.
